How to Play Darts (and Interactive Darts): A Complete Beginner’s Guide

Darts is one of those games that’s easy to pick up but endlessly satisfying to master. Whether you’re playing with traditional steel-tip darts at home or enjoying a high-tech digital darts setup at a bar or venue, the fundamentals remain the same; aim, accuracy, and a bit of competitive fun.

Let’s break it all down so you can start throwing like a pro.

The Basics of Traditional Darts

The Dartboard Layout:

A standard dartboard is divided into numbered sections from 1 to 20. Here’s how scoring works:

  • Single (outer area): Regular points (e.g., hit 10 = 10 points).
  • Double (outer ring): 2x points.
  • Triple (inner ring): 3x points.
  • Bullseye:
    • Outer bull (green): 25 points.
    • Inner bull (red): 50 points.

Common Dart Games

1. 501 (Most Popular Game)

  • Each player starts with 501 points.
  • Take turns throwing 3 darts per round.
  • Subtract your score from 501.
  • The goal: reach exactly 0.
  • You must finish on a double (outer ring).

Example: If you have 32 points left, you must hit double 16

2. 301

A faster version of 501 with the same rules, great for beginners.

3. Around the Clock

  • Hit numbers in order from 1 to 20.
  • Then hit the bullseye to win.
  • First player to complete the sequence wins.

4. Interactive Games

  • Kingpin venues host a range of interactive minigames.
  • These games flip the rules completely, and each is unique.

How to Throw a Dart

Stance

  • Stand side-on to the board.
  • Keep your feet behind the throw line (called the oche).
  • Stay balanced and relaxed.

At Kingpin, there are 3 levels of 'oche' lines on the darts carpets in the booths, with the furthest away from the wall being the internation standard of 2.37m from the board.

Grip

  • Hold the dart gently, don’t squeeze.
  • Use 2-4 fingers comfortably, like you would hold a pencil.

Aim & Release

  • Focus on your target, not the dart.
  • Smooth, controlled throw.
  • Follow through with your arm pointing at the target to finish.

What Is Interactive Darts?

Interactive darts (also called Augmented Reality darts) use a real dartboard with built-in sensors and projected digital overlays that automatically track scores and modify the game.

How Digital Darts Work

  • Players throw real darts at a a real dartboard with an electronic sensored overlay.

  • The system automatically:
    • Calculates scores.
    • Tracks turns.
    • Displays leaderboards.
  • Kingpin's system includes:
    • Multiplayer modes.
    • Animated visuals.
    • Many game variations.

Tips to Improve Your Game

  • Practice consistency: Aim for the same spot repeatedly.
  • Play strategically: Especially in games like 501.
  • Stay relaxed: Overthinking hurts accuracy.
  • Find your rhythm: Consistency beats power.

Final Thoughts

Whether you prefer the classic pub-style experience or the flashy, modern feel of digital darts, the game is all about precision, practice, and having a good time. Interactive darts make it easier than ever to jump in and play.

Either way, step up, take aim, and let it fly.
